about

Whirligigs, written by vocalist Eva Araya, is a whimsical inner-monologue directed at a recent love interest whose interest in her is unrequited. With a twinge of annoying guilt, she points out the unfairness in faking romance for another’s comfort, but also highlights the clear divide between physical intimacy and the following expected emotional intimacy. “Don’t try so hard to change how it is,” she says, and examines guilt and shame as two-sided processes: “...when I try to form those words my tongue falls flat and it gets worse; my fingers twitch and my eyes begin to shift. The only thing that seems to work is letting them go on undisturbed, and meanwhile I’m just looking to connect.”

lyrics

Your eyes are looking so wide, my darling
Watching me unwind like tiny whirligigs
Pointing out my ups and downs.

I let my hands get the best of me
By holding onto everything
And in three acts, gave my mind an epic to direct.
It seems I always ruin things
By sitting back and lazily watching
As all I sought sinks into an abyss.

So shut your mouth and lean into this.
Don't try so hard to change how it is.
Nothing you say could matter now
when you've got such a pretty face.

You told me more about your childhood stories
And high school nightmares that torture your dreams,
You trusted me and now your gaze is burning mine.
Cause when I try to form those words,
My tongue falls flat, and it gets worse.
My fingers twitch, and my eyes begin to shift.

The only thing that seems to work
Is letting them go on undisturbed,
And meanwhile I'm just looking to connect.

So shut your mouth and lean into this.
Don't try so hard to change how it is.
Nothing you say could matter now
when you've got such a pretty face.

I don't think I'll apologize,
It's just not in my nature.
But every time I look at him
I'll think of you like this,
With those eyes.
With those, eyes.
